Baton Rouge man arrested for burglarizing 14 St. Tammany Parish businesses

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Deputies arrested a Baton Rouge man after he burglarized over a dozen businesses across the parish. Gary Howes, 54, was taken into custody, Wednesday morning.

According to police, several business owners from Mandeville, Slidell and other small towns across St. Tammany Parish arrived at their businesses, Tuesday morning, to find their front windows broken and cash registers missing. The STPSO worked in collaboration with Mandeville police and Slidell police to investigate the burglaries. Police looked over surveillance footage and within hours, they were able to identify Howes as the man responsible.

Howes was located Wednesday morning in Tallulah, La. and arrested by Madison Parish Sheriff's Deputies. He is currently being held in Madison Parish until he can be extradited back to St. Tammany Parish, where he will be charged with multiple counts business burglary.

Sheriff Jack Strain, Chief Randy Smith (Slidell) and Chief Rick Richard (Mandeville) issued the following statement: "We are extremely proud of our agencies' combined efforts to identify and apprehend this suspect so quickly. Our residents expect and deserve a law enforcement community that works together for them, and that is exactly what we have in St. Tammany Parish."

"As with so many cases like this one, our judicial system worked for our residents like a well-oiled machine," Strain added.
