NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A single vehicle fire involving a dump truck on Interstate 10 shutdown both sides of the interstate Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 10 between the Canal Street on-ramp and Orleans Avenue. exit in downtown New Orleans.
The accident forced police to shutdown both sides of the interstate. At 4 p.m., one lane had been reopened on the eastbound side. Two lanes were flowing on the westbound side.
The New Orleans Fire Department upgraded the incident to a level one hazardous materials incident because the dump truck leaded nearly 100 gallons of diesel fuel.
The truck's load of dirt spilled onto the interstate when the truck crashed into the median separating both sides of I-10. Motorists are asked to avoid this area until further notice.
