Jim Henderson's Black & Gold Breakdown: Saints vs. Panthers

As we enter the home stretch of this oddest season in the Saints' recent history, who would have thought that:

-The Saints would be trying to snap a home losing streak before going back on the road a week from Monday trying to extend their winning streak as visitors.

-That the Saints would be the only team in the NFC South without at least a five-game losing streak through the first 12 games of the season.

-That the Carolina Panthers would go winless since the second week of October and still be mathematically in the division race.

Of course, the Saints can put an end to that silliness by extending the Panthers' losing streak to seven games, and there are any number of reasons to think that they will.

-Cam Newton's season-long funk playing behind an anonymous offensive line and saddled with a crop of wide receivers that boasts Kelvin Benjamin and little else.

-A defense that waived two contributors this week including a starting cornerback.

-And a special teams unit that's given up four touchdowns this season including two blocked punts returned for touchdowns by the Vikings last week.

The Saints have a great opportunity to take over sole possession of first place in the division with the Falcons traveling to Green Bay on Monday night. Logic tells you they will. But there's been little in this season so far that has been logical, and much that has defied it.
