Marrero man gets life in prison for 2004 arson case

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A 29-year-old Marrero man has been sentenced to life in prison in connection with a federal arson case that involved the death of four people.

The sentence was handed down by a federal judge in New Orleans on Thursday in the case of Cyrus Casby.

Casby was convicted in 2013. Prosecutors said Casby stabbed his ex-girlfriend, Cynthia Carto, and her mother, Janice Carto, before setting a fire at the top of a stair landing at an apartment in Harvey.

Cynthia Carto died of stab wounds. Janice Carto died as a result of the fire, along with 19-month-old Cyanna Carto, who was the daughter of Casby and Cynthia Carto.

An 11-year-old boy, Cleveland McGinnis Jr., also died as a result of the fire.
