A second-degree murder warrant has been issued for a man in the Sunday killing of a teenager in Harvey, and the teen's mom said she tried to do her best to keep her son out of trouble.

Deputies are looking for 18-year-old Terrance Hudson of 1550 Gretna Boulevard, in the shooting death of 16-year-old Maurcell Mitchell, of N. Tonti Street in New Orleans.

Police said Mitchell was shot in the back of the head with a 12-gauge shotgun. The shooting occurred just after 9 p.m. in the 1200 block of Angus Drive. Witnesses Identified Hudson as the person seen running away from the scene with the shotgun, along with three other subjects. Investigators have not determined a motive.

Maurcell's mother, Rita Clark, said her son spent the weekend at his grandmother's house on the west bank. She said he and his cousin left on their bikes Sunday evening.

"I feel like somebody called him there for him to get there, because before he left his grandmother says he asked her where that street was," Clark said.

Maurcell was Clark's only child.

“I kept saying I wasn't going to let the streets take my baby away from me,” she said. “I tried. I did everything I could to try to protect him. I told him what to look for, what not to get into - but they still do it."
