Child, 7, says Central City substitute teacher raped him

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A 7-year-old student says he was raped by a substitute teacher in the bathroom of a Central City elementary school.

The alleged incident happened at Mahalia Jackson Elementary School, located in the 2400 block of Jackson Avenue. New Orleans police say that the incident was reported Monday at about 8:30 a.m.

Lakeysha London, the school's principle since 2010, said that the substitute gym teacher had worked at the school for three weeks. He was not in the classroom on Tuesday when the allegations became public.

The teacher is employed by the Orleans Parish public school system. London tells FOX 8 that the allegations are very serious. While the alleged rape happened on campus, she is asking parents not to panic because the investigation is ongoing and no arrest has been made.

"I don't know much about the investigation because it is being investigated, so I do not have much information to share," said London. "What I would like to say is to our parents, first and foremost, is that we provide a wholesome environment for our students each and every day. We thrive on making sure that our students come here to a safe environment, and we will continue to work with the authorities in this matter."

Interim schools Superintendent Stan Smith spent the day at the school. He said the substitute teacher worked at Mahalia Jackson for the past three weeks but was hired in October.

"We do background checks on all of our teachers and staff, whether it's full-time or substitute, and one of the first things we did was look at those background checks, and there was nothing in there that gave us any red flags," Smith said.
