New north shore levee board meets for 1st time

A newly formed levee board met for the first time Wednesday night on the north shore and began mapping a strategy to improve flood protection in St. Tammany.

Much of the meeting was organizational, but the new board members also laid out their goals.

“We represent the entire parish,” said board member Henry Difranco. “We must address all their concerns.”

Members addressed flood and drainage issues in a vulnerable parish that has seen thousands of homes flooded over the years.

“I'm here because my Eden Isles home got flooded,” said board member Dan McGovern. “I never want to see that happen again.”

The first order of business was to establish a three-member committee to determine bylaws.

“It has to be well-thought-out and be clear as to what benefit it would show,” said Parish President Pat Brister.

The board selected lawyer Rykert Toledano as interim chairman until bylaws are established. They also decided to hold monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of the month.
