NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Demonstrating the potential dangers of dry Christmas trees, the New Orleans Fire Department set fire to several trees on Thursday morning.

Officials say that Christmas lights can spark a fire on a dry tree. As demonstrated, a dry tree can become fully engulfed in flames within seconds.

Firefighters also recommend installing smoke detectors in the same room as a Christmas tree to give an early warning at the first sign of smoke. If something were to happen, it does not take long for a Christmas tree to burn.

Firefighters encourage you to keep the cut portion of your tree in water to keep branches moist and more resistant to fire.
