Payton: Report of stepping away from Saints is 'ridiculous'

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - What a week it has been out at Saints camp.

First was the cut of wide receiver Joe Morgan. Then it was the report that head coach Sean Payton had one-on-one meetings with ten players. This was followed by the report, which Sean Payton downplayed, that safety Kenny Vaccaro was getting demoted.

But before all of that, there was the report by Sports Illustrated Peter King that Payton's time could be coming to an end here in New Orleans.

King speculated, not really reported, that Payton could be nearing his expiration date with the Saints. He basically said that Payton has been with the team for eight years and that is usually the time a head coach starts to get, what he calls, 'wanderlust.'

It's no secret Payton and the rest of the team has fallen short of expectations this season. But any talk of him stepping away, he says, is ridiculous.

"So it's not a report. Peter King offered his ten things he thinks - it's silly. It won't happen, I'm not going to bite your head off but it's just you have to consider the source. Why do you say that? For obvious reasons, there is absolutely no way," said Payton

The source and Payton haven't spoken much since the bounty situation.
