Houma man arrested for firing weapon on MLK Boulevard

HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - Police arrested a Houma man for firing a gun in a shopping center who claims he was trying to "scare off men that were chasing him," according to police.

The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office received a report Saturday night around 9 p.m. that 42-year-old Torrey Matthews was firing a handgun on Martin Luther King Boulevard in the parking lot of Ichiban Restaurant. Witnesses said he then ran across the street and fire more shots in the Best Buy parking lot before discarding the firearm and running into a Lowe's. 

No one was hurt and no property was damaged during the incident. Police later identified the suspect as Matthews and arrested him.

Police questioned Matthews and he admitted to the shooting, saying that he was firing the gun to scare off men that were chasing him, according to police.

The firearm that was used during the incident was found to have been previously reported stolen from a vehicle burglary.

Matthews was arrested for illegal discharge of a firearm, terrorizing, illegal possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
