Helis Oil awarded St. Tammany drilling permit

MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) -

The state Office of Conservation has approved Helis Oil Co.'s permit to drill an exploratory well to a depth of 12,000 feet in northeast of Mandeville.

The approval came Friday with some conditions. Helis will not be allowed to use earthen pits to handle waste water. It will also have to cement intermediate casing to a depth of 12,000 feet and monitor air and water quality at the site.

The company is required to go back to the Office of Conservationfor permission to drill horizontally and begin fracking.

There are currently two lawsuits seeking to assert St. Tammany zoning rights, which some believe could block the project. The area off Interstate 12 and Highway 1088 is currently zoned residential.
