Sheriff: Assumption Parish man shoots dog, takes daughter hostage

BAYOU L'OURSE, LA (WVUE) - An Assumption Parish man is behind bars after deputies say he took his 5-year-old daughter hostage and shot his dog.

Officers received a call that 49-year-old Danny Ray Reding was armed and had taken his daughter hostage on Friday (Dec. 19) around 5:40 a.m. According to Sheriff Mike Waguespack, Reding fired four shots. One of them was aimed at his friend and one of them hit his own dog. Reding then took his daughter and locked themselves inside a bedroom.

Deputies arrived on the scene and set up a perimeter around the house. Officers heard another shot fired from inside the house and entered the residence. Reding attempted to escape through the back door, but was subdued by deputies, the sheriff said.

During his attempted escape, officers say Reding cut his hand with a knife he was holding at the time. Police later located the .22 caliber revolver Reding is accused of firing.

Reding later told police that he had been up all night drinking with a friend while on medication.

Reding's daughter was not harmed during the incident. His dog is undergoing surgery and is expected to survive.

Reding was booked on charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, cruelty to juveniles, cruelty to animals, carrying of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instruments and resisting an officer.
