Pelicans look shaky in lopsided loss to Trail Blazers

The young New Orleans Pelicans (13-13) continue to play inconsistently this season, falling to the Portland Trail Blazers by 26 points Saturday night at the Smoothie King Center. The 114-88 defeat was the second most lopsided affair of the year for the Pels, who entered the match-up with a two-game win streak.

Anthony Davis made just 3-of-14 shots to finish with seven points. As a team, the Pelicans shot just 35 percent from the floor. Ryan Anderson added 16 points off the bench, but New Orleans also committed 16 turnovers.

Playing the second game of a back-to-back, Portland (22-6) raced out to a commanding 32-17 lead after the first quarter. LaMarcus Aldridge led the way with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds. Damian Lillard had 17 points and seven assists.

The Pels will face the Thunder in Oklahoma City tomorrow night.

Two games into the preseason, and Drew Brees still hasn't got on the field. Instead, the most airtime Brees got was with the family before kickoff. Without No. 9 in the lineup, the Saints offense turned the ball over four times in the first half. The Cardinals capitalized on the mistakes, and lead at half, 17-3. Hau’Oli Kikaha Kikaha has been on the outside looking in all camp and hasn’t done much to change that perception. He’s played strong side linebacker and defensive end. And that partly illustrates his biggest problem. He’s a bit of a tweener and can’t seem to find a natural fit. He may be best suited as a standup outside linebacker in a 3-4 system which Dennis Allen obviously doesn’t run. Austin Carr Carr was a player I was high on before camp due...more>>
