AMITE, LA (WVUE) -

The power of the storm that spawned a tornado in Amite is clear. It uprooted large trees and it looks like all the way down roadways, but it could not uproot the families. Those residents say they are determined to rebuild and get their lives back to normal as soon as possible.

"I was actually overwhelmed when I first drove out here. I mean, actually broke down and cried. It's unusual to be the man in charge and having to come up on your own and your neighbors," Amite Fire Department Chief Bruce Cutrer. "My support personnel and my officers in the fire department did a tremendous job of taking over the reins taking the bull by the horns and doing what had to be done."

The National Weather Service sent surveyors out to the area Wednesday. They said the tornado that touched down just east of Amite was an EF-2. No one was injured, but a lot of property was destroyed.

"There's a lot to do a lot we have to get out of the house and store. Insurance will come Monday and tell us what we have to do with it. It's going to take a while it will be a long-term process getting her back in the house," said JD Stevens, the brother of a tornado victim.

But the dark skies that swept through southeast Louisiana on Tuesday could not dim the spirits of the community.

"You never take Christ out of Christmas and everything happens for a reason. Nobody was hurt or killed so we're going to have a Merry Christmas," Cutrer said.

Families said at least their comforted knowing that this Christmas Eve they will be surrounded by the love of their families and by the love of strangers to help the people they have never met before.
