Victim in Metairie hit-and-run dies; woman faces new charges

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - The man who was struck by a car on Christmas Eve day died Wednesday (Dec. 31), and the woman who hit him and drove off now faces new charges.

Travis Burns, 27, was critically injured and had been hospitalized since the accident on Causeway Boulevard. The driver, 25-year-old Jennifer Kuzma of Metairie, was previously booked with felony hit-and-run, injuring public records and criminal mischief. She will be rebooked with negligent homicide and obstruction of justice, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The accident occurred in the early morning hours of Dec. 24. Police said Burns was hit as he was crossing North Causeway Boulevard just south of the Earhart Expressway.

Investigators were led to Kuzma by the manager of a body shop where she had brought her car for repairs after the accident. While the manager was talking to an officer in the body shop, Kuzma arrived to pick up her car.

Under questioning, Kuzma said she didn't know what she ran over on Causeway Boulevard. Investigators said Kuzma admitted leaving the scene, however she returned approximately 30 minutes later and called 911 to report finding Burns lying in the roadway. She never told the officer who responded to her call that she was involved in the accident.
