Police: Woman randomly attacked outside Covington bar; witnesses fight off suspect

Christopher G. Schilling, 31 Christopher G. Schilling, 31

A woman was randomly attacked and her friend was cut with a knife outside of a Covington business, police say. Witnesses were allegedly able to fight off the attacker and hold him down until police arrived.

The incident was reported around 2 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of E. Gibson Street. Officers were patrolling nearby as bars closed for the night when they were approached by an individual who reported the incident.

The officers responded to the scene where they found Christopher Schilling, 31, pinned to the ground by an alleged witness.

Officers say that the victim left a local establishment and was walking to a friend's car in the 400 block of E. Gibson Street when she was approached from behind by Schilling. The victim tells police she did not known Schilling prior to the incident.

Schilling allegedly grabbed the woman by her hair. The victim's female friend, who witnessed the attack from her car, exited the vehicle and attempted to help her friend by fighting off Schilling, officers say.

Police say that three other individuals witnessed the attack and came to help. As the witnesses pulled the female friend off of the suspect, police say she was cut on the side of her neck. Her injuries were minor.

The witnesses kicked the knife out of the suspect's hand and held him until officers arrived, police say.

Covington police say that Schilling was not cooperative and claims to not remember the incident. He was arrested and transported to St. Tammany Parish Jail.

While in jail, police say Schilling became unresponsive. He was transported to the hospital and released a short time later.

Schilling has been charged with aggravated battery, five counts of aggravated assault, three counts of simple battery and two counts of disturbing the peace.
