Armed robbery victims describe terrifying ordeal

Suspects arrested for armed robberies Suspects arrested for armed robberies
NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Four young men face charges in connection with a string of armed robberies. Police identify the suspects as Morris Smith, Taman Martin, Darrell Quinn and Tevin Quinn. Police say the four men committed at least five armed robberies, and they're being investigated for eight to 12 more.

Sunday night, a man and woman were held up in the 7000 block of Camp Street. The woman, whom we're choosing not to identify, says, “I started screaming and screaming and screaming, kind of on purpose so somebody would hear, but nobody did.”

The woman says fear is the first thing that came to mind as she watched three men run towards her and her fiancé, with guns in hand.

The victim explains, “They asked us to give them what we had so he (victim) gave them his wallet and they asked for my purse and I said I didn't have one. I just kept saying, I don't have it, I don't have it, I don't have it.”

The couple was unloading groceries from their car at around 6:30 at the woman's mother's house on Camp when they were held up. The victims gave the suspects a bag of five wine bottles they'd just bought, along with their cell phones. The male victims recalls, “At first it didn't seem real and then when it set in and I saw the scope all over her white jacket, the laser sight, I said this is totally real.”

The suspects were allegedly holding a 9 millimeter, a revolver and a 45. One of them, had a laser attached to it, pointing at the exact area where a bullet would hit if fired.

“I think when I woke up this morning, I realized, we're really lucky to be alive,” the woman said.

Police say the robbery of this couple was the second one committed in 30 minutes by the four suspects. Before that, a man walking in the 5100 block of Camp was held up. Surveillance video shows the moment it happened. Then, after the couple, the suspects allegedly made their way to Willow Street where they tried to rob a 62 year old woman. Lastly, a 31 year old man was held up on Fern. In all the cases, police say the suspects were driving a stolen Toyota 4Runner. Sunday night, officers located the vehicle.

“A brief car chase ensued and we recovered the Toyota 4Runner and we apprehended four individuals,” said NOPD Second Dist. Commander Paul Noel.

After executing a search warrant, police recovered guns, ski masks and gloves they say were used in not only the four armed robberies Sunday but another one that occurred on Henry Clay December 22nd and possibly others as well.

“We're gonna go back and look at every armed robbery that occurred from December 1st on but I can tell you that we believe they're solid suspects in at least eight to 12 other armed robberies that occurred in the 2nd district,” Noel said.

Back on Camp Street, this couple says they're still trying to fully process what happened and how close they came to four individuals deemed very dangerous by New Orleans police.

When police executed the search warrants Sunday night, they found all of the victims stolen property, including cell phones, wallets and the five bottles of wine the couple on Camp Street handed over to the suspects. They also located a handgun that had been stolen from the victim on Henry Clay last month.
