THIBODAUX, LA (WVUE) -

A Thibodaux High School teacher admitted to having sexual contact with a 17-year-old student, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office.

Celeste Bergeron, 25, of Thibodaux was charged Wednesday and is no longer employed by the Lafourche Parish School District.

Police say detectives began investigating Monday after learning of alleged sexual contact between Bergeron and the student.

School officials placed Bergeron on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Detectives learned Bergeron and the student engaged in sexual activity on at least two occasions, and had exchanged numerous private messages over social media.

In meeting with detectives Wednesday morning, Bergeron admitted to having sexual contact with the student. She was issued a criminal summons.

Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews said Bergeron is no longer employed by the Lafourche Parish School District. "This type of behavior will not be tolerated by any personnel in Lafourche Parish Schools and will be dealt with swiftly," said Matthews.
