Local 'Idol' contestant hopes dance with Jennifer Lopez is first of many moments

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

An Ole Miss student from our area hopes to be the next American Idol, and Michael Simeon knows it's not just about the song.

“Each performance has to have a moment,” Simeon said. “You have to have a moment that is going to be remembered by the people watching, and if you don't have that, you're just another ok singer.”

Simeon hopes his dance with Jennifer Lopez will be the first of many moments on his journey to becoming the next American Idol. The 21-year old from Lumberton, Miss., has traveled this road before, making it to the top 48 last season.

“Last year, being around people like Alex Preston and Gina Irene - people that were in the top 10 - was really cool to be in the top 48 with people that were at that skill level,” he said.

Simeon tried out again when the season 14 auditions came to New Orleans, but he didn't make it. So he gave it another shot in Nashville. After getting the golden ticket to Hollywood, Simeon got his moment.

“Dancing with Jennifer Lopez is I would hope not a once-in-a-lifetime experience, because it would be great to do it again,” Simeon said. But it was really cool. Very few people get to do that.”

And few people make it far on American Idol, but that's exactly what Simeon hopes to do in the coming weeks.

Between seasons of American Idol, Simeon studies electrical engineering. He wants that to be his backup plan.

“I would like to make my living creating music and entertaining people,” he said. “It's a great form of expression. It's an art form just like painting on canvas. You know musicians paint their pictures on silence and I love to do that and it's something I want to do for the rest of my life and I think that American Idol is a great venue to showcase the talent I believe I have.”

This moment could be just the beginning. American Idol continues Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. right here on FOX 8.
