NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Construction begins Monday morning on a new streetcar line in New Orleans.

Stretching from Canal Street to Elysian Fields, construction will commence along North Rampart and St. Claude at 8 a.m.

The Regional Transit Authority says drivers will still be able to drive down Rampart, but they will not be able to cross the median at St. Ann Street or Dumain. Traffic from Orleans Avenue to St. Philip Street will go down to one lane in both directions.

Crews do not expect the streetcar line to be ready for riders until September of 2016.

Drivers should expect streets and intersections in the area to close temporarily over the course of the construction project.
