Vehicles exchange gunfire along I-10, suspects in custody

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - Two men are in police custody after an exchange of gunfire along I-10.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office received reports that two vehicles were exchanging gunfire on westbound I-10 approaching Causeway Blvd.

Officers first received reports of gunfire around 1 a.m. Monday. Moments later, deputies say they received reports of an accident involving the same two vehicles. Witnesses reported that two black males in hooded sweatshirts were seen running away from the accident scene toward Metairie Court.

Officers arriving on the scene found a Dodge Charger and Jeep Cherokee unoccupied.

An additional call came in reporting a suspect in the caller's backyard in the 500 block of Melody Drive, deputies say. Tommie Bridges, 28, was apprehended. Officers say Bridges admitted that he was a passenger in the Charger. Bridges told deputies he did not remember who the driver was.

A second suspect was located in the 1900 block of Metairie Court, officers say. Verkeese Williby, 28, was taken into custody for questioning.

While Bridges and Williby were being questioned, Ochsner Main Campus alerted police that a man arrived suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Kendrick Johnson, told investigators he was driving his Dodge Charger on I-10, but couldn't recall what happened or how he was shot.

His injury in not life-threatening.
