Police: Speeding motorcyclist killed on I-12

HAMMOND, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle that occurred around 10:20 Sunday night. The crash, which took the life of 46-year-old William Wilbert of Hammond, happened in Tangipahoa Parish on I-12 eastbound near La. 3158.

A police spokesperson said that the crash involved a 2005 Harley Davidson, which Wilbert was operating, and a 1994 Chevrolet truck, which Wayne McGary of Ponchatoula was operating.

Both were traveling eastbound on I-12 in the right lane. Wilbert was driving above the speed limit when he struck the rear of the truck. Police say he lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected from it. Wilbert was pronounced dead on the scene.

McGary and his passenger, James Wright of Independence, were restrained and not injured.

Toxicology samples were collected, and those results are pending under investigation.
