Golden Meadow residents accused of harvesting oysters in polluted area

LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

Three Golden Meadow residents are accused of taking oysters Jan 17 from a polluted area near Bayou Blue in Lafourche Parish, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Senior Agent Thomas Wolf was responding to a complaint of illegal oyster harvesting when he spotted a vessel fishing in an unapproved area.

After stopping the vessel, Wolf cited John Mejia, 50, Talasha C. Nelson, 34, and Jeffrey Shepard, 58.

Wolf seized and returned four sacks of oysters to the water. He also seized the dredges and vessel.

Taking oysters from an unapproved, polluted area carries a a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. The subjects could also forfeit any seized equipment if convicted.
