Teen shoots father in back in Plaquemines Parish

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Deputies are searching for an 18-year-old man wanted for shooting his father in the back in Plaquemines Parish.

Deandre Leon Brooks Avist, 18, is wanted for shooting his 58-year-old father. Deputies say he is also wanted in a related domestic incident that happened earlier in the day.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday in the 33600 block of Highway 11 in Empire. Avist allegedly shot his father in the back with a pistol at the residence, according to the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office.

He fled from the scene prior to deputies' arrival and remains at large.

Earlier Tuesday evening, officers say Avist was involved in a domestic disturbance with family members at the home. He left the residence before deputies arrived at the scene.

Officers say Avist returned to the residence after deputies cleared the call. Deputies were allegedly searching for Avist at this time and attempting to obtain an arrest warrant.

Avist then allegedly shot his father once in the back. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

Avist has been described as a black male, around 5'11" and weighing approximately 160 pounds. Officers say he has short afro cut hair. He no longer has dreadlocks as depicted in a PPSO press release.

Deputies say he should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111 or the sheriff's office at (504) 564-2525.
