Plaquemines Parish sheriff warns tax time is scam time

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Lonnie Greco is warning residents about a phone and email scam involving income tax that often pops up around this time of year.

On Thursday, (Jan. 22), a Jefferson Parish resident reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be an IRS agent and saying that the resident owed money. The caller said if the money wasn't paid within an hour, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office would arrest him.

On another call, a resident was told the same thing and was ordered to send money via Western-Union or some other similar form of payment. On other occasions, callers have told residents to send payment via a pre-paid debit card.

The caller reportedly had a foreign accent and is possibly of Asian descent.

The calls were placed from telephone number (888) 283-7948. After investigating, the PPSO determined that the number is fake and possibly "spoofed," which means that callers can falsify the phone number and/or name on caller ID information to disguise the identity of the caller.

The IRS has reported that this scam is being committed nationwide, is on their "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams for this year, and has been surging in recent months.

Sheriff Greco is providing the following tips:

· If someone calls saying they are an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up. The IRS will contact you by U.S. mail first. And, they will never demand immediate payment by phone or ask for credit card or debit numbers.

· Report the incident to the Treasury Inspector for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 800-366-4484.

· Never provide personal identifying information, such as name, date of birth, social security number or PIN number to someone you do not know.

· Never provide personal identifying information, such as name, date of birth, social security number or PIN number to someone you do not know.

Welcome in to Juan's World and as you know, this blog that I do is strictly an opinion piece with a few facts sprinkled in here and there. So, with that in mind, I'm under the opinion that the Saints should've been 'expected' to look past the Jets to next weeks rematch with the Falcons. How could they not look ahead to Atlanta coming to the dome next Sunday. And before you go all 'One Game at a Time' on me, think for a second. You're supposed to beat the Jets, who came in 5-8 and wi...

Three turnovers against the lowly Jets can still get you a win in this league. Numerous giveaways against the Eagles, Vikings, Rams, or Panthers might not give you the same result in the standings. The Saints end the season with the Falcons and the Bucs. If they want to end the 2017 regular season campaign on a win streak, things need to be cleaned up. "Two fumbles, and at times you're going to score. I just think that's happened too many times to us this year. We're knocking a...
