BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state labor department says first-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Jan. 17 decreased to 2,987 from the previous week's total of 3,601.
For the comparable week a year earlier, there were 2,726 initial claims, officials said Friday.
The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure, increased to 2,492, from the previous week's average of 2,378.
Industries with the biggest over-the-week decrease in initial claims were construction, accommodation and food services, administrative and waste services, and retail trade.
Continued unemployment claims for the week ending Jan. 17 increased to 22,372 compared to 22,151 the previous week.
The four-week moving average for such claims increased to 21,582 from the previous week's average of 21,198.
