NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans Firefighters found an elderly man dead, Sunday, inside of his Algiers home.
According to an NOFD spokesperson, the fire department received a call Sunday at 11:53 a.m. of an odor of smoke in the 3700 block of Pittari Place. Responding units arrived on scene at 11:58 a.m. to find the elderly man unresponsive inside of the home. The incident was first discovered by the man's neighbor who went to check on him. The elderly man was pronounced dead on the scene by the Coroner's Office.
Fire investigators determined that the cause of the fire was due to an electric heater and when firefighters arrived, the fire was extinguished due to lack of oxygen or fuel, the spokesperson said.
Investigators also found that there were no smoke alarms inside the home. There were no other injuries to report. Investigators believe that the man died due to smoke inhalation. The Coroner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
