NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Police have identified a suspect in the deadly shooting of a Landry-Walker High School student.
Kareem Richards, 19, has been developed as a suspect in the deadly shooting of the 17-year-old, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Officers say Richards was developed as a suspect through witness participation.
The shooting was reported around 7:45 a.m. Monday in the 3700 block of Garden Oaks Drive. The young victim was found lying in the parking lot of the Forest Park apartment complex.
Officers arriving on the scene found a 17-year-old male shot multiple times in the body. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Algiers Charter School Association confirms that the 17-year-old was a student at Landry-Walker High School. People who live nearby and talked to the teen say they can't believe what happened Monday morning.
"That's bad though to kill a little boy for nothing. I feel he didn't deserve that. Whatever it was I don't think he deserved that," said Dalton Stamps, a neighbor.
Residents say the security cameras at the apartment complex do not work and many people know the codes to the gates.
Once apprehended, police say Richards will be charged with second degree murder. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
