Man arrested for illegal possession of a firearm, hunting deer out of season

LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's office arrested a Mathews man Saturday, January 24, after he was found hunting deer with a rifle out of season. Deputies say 26 year-old Leonie Guidry also faces charges related to illegal possession of a firearm. It is illegal for Guidry to have a gun because of a previous domestic abuse battery conviction.

The Lafourche Parish Water Patrol stopped the boat Guidry and two others were in after seeing them in gear commonly worn by hunters in the Company Canal near the intersection of Bayou Blue. Deputies questioned the group and told them deer season was closed to hunting with the kind of rifle they had.

Guidry told deputies that he rifle was his, and that he had left his hunting license inside a vehicle at the Lockport Boat Launch.

After getting to the boat launch, agents of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries joined the investigation. Through the investigation, deputies learned two of the three individuals, Guidry and 30 year-old Casey Loupe, did not have valid hunting licenses.

Deputies also learned the guidry was not supposed to possess any fire arms because of a previous conviction for domestic abuse battery.

He was arrested and taken to the Lafourche Parish Detention center in Thibodaux. He was released on Sunday afternoon after posting $4,000 bond.
