PIERRE PART, LA (WVUE) - An Assumption Parish deputy was fired Tuesday (Jan. 27) after being arrested over the weekend in a domestic dispute during which he tried to grab the gun of a responding officer, police said.
Gary Ellis Jr., 30, a four-year veteran with the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office, was booked into the Parish Detention Center on charges of domestic abuse battery, battery of a police officer and attempted disarming of a peace officer.
On Sunday at about 2:30 a.m., deputies responded to 133 Daniel Street in Pierre Part and made contact with Ellis' wife, who told them that Ellis had been at a party drinking and became argumentative when he returned home. She said Ellis had thrown her to the ground in different rooms of the house.
When a female deputy tried to calm him down, Ellis allegedly grabbed her and tried to grab her service weapon.
Statements taken during the incident were then referred to the Criminal Investigative Division of the Sheriff's Office for a full investigation.
Bond for Ellis has not been set and he remains in custody.
