NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

An official groundbreaking ceremony will be held Wednesday to commemorate a new streetcar line in New Orleans.

The Regional Transit Authority will commemorate the start of construction on the North Rampart Street/St. Claude Avenue streetcar project. The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the New Orleans Athletic Club, located in the 200 block of North Rampart Street.

Stretching from Canal Street to Elysian Fields, construction began on the project earlier this month. The 1.6 mile route is part of the RTA's French Quarter streetcar expansion project.

The RTA says drivers will still be able to drive down Rampart, but they will not be able to cross the median at St. Ann Street or Dumain. Traffic from Orleans Avenue to St. Philip Street will go down to one lane in both directions.

Drivers should expect streets and intersections in the area to close temporarily over the course of the construction project.

Crews do not expect the streetcar line to be ready for riders until September of 2016.
