NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Surveillance video captures a gunman running away after he held up two women in the French Quarter.

Police say the victims were on Bourbon Street near Ursulines early Tuesday morning when the gunman tried to take one of their purses.

Several Good Samaritans tried to stop the armed robbery, but police say they backed off when the gunman started waving his weapon. Investigators say a bystander chased him for several blocks until he lost sight of him.

Police describe the gunman as a black male, approximately 6'0" tall with a thin build and a short twist hairstyle. He was wearing a grey sweater and dark pants.

Mobile viewers can view the surveillance video here: http://youtu.be/0nd-QwBBBtw.

If you have any information that can help police catch him, you're urged to call Crimestoppers at 822-1111.
