Suspect named in 7th Ward shooting of Irish cop

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Police named a suspect in the shooting of an Irish police officer on vacation in New Orleans.

NOPD detectives issued an arrest warrant for 40-year-old Melvin Galle Jr. for Attempted Murder and Armed Robbery in connection with the shooting of Brian Hanrahan in the 7th Ward.

The incident happened in the 2200 block of New Orleans Street.

At approximately 5:40 a.m., Fifth District officers received a call of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found 30-year-old Hanrahan lying in the driveway of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

Hanrahan told police he met a man who brought him to the area after telling the victim that he knew of a place where they could get a drink. He told police that he went to an ATM and withdrew $200. When they reached the location on New Orleans Street, Hanrahan told police that another man confronted him and asked him for money. When he refused, the man shot him and took his money. The suspects then fled on foot.
