Telephone scam targeting people in New Orleans area

PLAQUEMINES PARISH, LA (WVUE) - The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office is reporting a possible phone scam in the New Orleans metro area.

Sheriff Lonnie Greco says people are receiving phone calls and a man, usually with a heavy accent, describes any of the situations listed here:

- a loved one has been in an automobile accident and is hospitalized, send money for treatment

- a loved one hit the caller's brother's car, send money or the loved one will die

- a loved one damaged some property and is being held as collateral, send money for relief.

The amounts the caller asks for vary between $700 and $2,200, and the caller tells the victim not to get off the phone until the money is wired or the loved one will be harmed.

Two numbers the calls appear to have originated from include 504-400-1658 and 939-262-2168.

Sheriff Greco advises anyone who receives a similar phone call to not send money, and report the call your local law enforcement immediately.
