There is a possible link between early menopause and chronic fatigue syndrome.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers studied two groups of women who provided information about their gynecological health.

One group had chronic fatigue syndrome, but the other did not. Women with chronic fatigue syndrome were more likely to have gynecological health issues. They were also more likely to use hormones for other purposes besides birth control, such as to treat irregular periods or menopausal symptoms. And the group was slightly more likely to undergo both natural and hysterectomy-related menopause at an earlier age.

More research is needed to confirm why this link exists. But the team notes it could be one of the reasons why women are as much as four times more likely to have chronic fatigue syndrome than men, and why this condition is most common among women in their 40s.

Findings appear in the journal "Menopause."
