HOUMA, LA (WVUE) - A Houma man is under arrest for allegedly violating sex offender laws during Carnival.
Sheriff Jerry Larpenter says last week, a concerned citizen reported to the TPSO sex offender's division that 34-year-old Glynn Matherne was participating in upcoming Mardi Gras parade festivities.
According to laws, registered sex offenders are barred from participating in Mardi Gras parades in which their faces are covered with a mask and in which they distribute candy, beads or trinkets to juveniles. Police say Matherne was even named king of this year's parade.
Krewe officials told detectives that they were unaware of his sex offender status. The krewe also says Matherne provided them with a copy of an altered driver's license without the "sex offender" status that is printed on it.
Police charged him with participating in last year's parade.
Matherne is jailed at the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex where he awaits a bond hearing.
Police say he has been a registered sex offender since 2003 after a conviction for a felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
