LAFOURCHE PARISH, LA (WVUE) - A pair of repeat DWI offenders were arrested Monday by Lafourche Parish Deputies in separate incidents.
Jessie Joseph, 30, of Raceland was charged with his seventh DWI. Three hours prior, 24-year-old Austin Richards of Thibodaux was charged with his fourth.
According to police, deputies responded to a disturbance around 7:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Woodland Drive and Maple Street in Chackbay. Deputies arrived on scene and found a white pickup truck in the ditch. The trucks owner, identified as Richards, told deputies at first that he did not drive the vehicle in the ditch and that he only tried to drive it out.
Witnesses on scene told deputies that they saw Richards drive the truck into the ditch. Police picked up the a strong alcoholic smell on Richard's breath and conducted a field sobriety test, which police say he failed. Richards refused to submit to a breathalyzer test, leading deputies to obtain a warrant for a blood test.
Police found that Richards had a lengthy history including three prior DWI arrests and that his license was expired. They also learned that he did not have an ignition interlock device in his vehicle, which he was supposed to have.
After receiving treatment at the hospital, Richards was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center. He was booked with his fourth DWI, having no interlock device and driving under suspension. His bond was set to $56,500.
Police say that around 10 p.m., deputies were called to a convenience store on Highway 1 in Raceland where a man was sleeping in a vehicle near a gas pump.
When police pulled up, they noticed that the man was slumped over the steering wheel with the vehicle's engine still running. Deputies woke the man, identified as Jessie Joseph and noticed that he showed signs of intoxication. He refused to submit in breathalyzer and field sobriety tests, officers said.
A warrant for a blood test was obtained and a sample was sent off for testing. Deputies learned that Joseph had six prior DWI charges in California. He was brought to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center and booked with his first Louisiana DWI offense and seventh overall. His bond was set at $25,000.
