KENNER, LA (WVUE) - The City of Kenner is looking for a developer to bring restaurants, condos, shops, and more to the Laketown section of the city.
Laketown sits just north of the Pontchartrain Center and includes a recreational area, a boat launch, fishing piers, and the Treasure Chest Casino.
There are 15 acres of vacant reclaimed land in Laketown that Kenner Mayor Mike Yenni says would bring people and their sales tax dollars to the lake.
"It was originally zoned for something recreational and now we got the state to work with us to be able to put it for commercial development," Yenni said. "This is one of the largest areas that can be developed, taking advantage of the lake. I mean, this lake is a very beautiful asset that is very, very underutilized. Only people that rent the shelters or come on out here on Sundays and have a picnic really get to take advantage of it and that's why I'd like to have kind of a destination here in the city of Kenner."
Kenner released a Request for Proposals to developers in early January.
Yenni says the city has had initial interest from dozens of developers. The proposals are due in May. Yenni says if the city lands a good proposal, he hopes to get through the design and permitting phase in time to break ground on the project in early 2016.
He says a perfect timeline would have the project finished in 2018, at the same time New Orleans Louis Armstrong Airport is scheduled to open its new terminal. Yenni says Boyd Gaming, the company that operates the Treasure Chest Casino, is working with the city on the plans.
