COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) -

A driver lost control, flipped his vehicle and was trapped inside Thursday. He had to be extricated.

The single-vehicle accident happened at 5:15 p.m. near Covington along Hwy. 21 near Simms Valley Road.

A witness called 911 and firefighters from St. Tammany Fire Protection District 12 were able to free the driver. His passenger was able to escape and sustained only minor injuries.

"Given the time of day that this incident occurred, it is fortunate that there weren't more people involved," said FD12 Chief Darrell Guilott. "We'd like to remind all of our public to stay aware of their surroundings and to stay focused while driving."

The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Louisiana State Police are investigating.
