Second rape reported in City Park area in less than a week

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

UPDATE: The District Attorney's Office refused these charges in July.

A woman was allegedly raped on City Park Avenue in Mid City Saturday morning.

According to NOPD, 32-year-old Chad Sanders was arrested on charges of rape after a known female acquaintance said he sexually assaulted her in City park around 7:30 a.m. on Feb. 14 in the 300 block of City Park Avenue.

A New Orleans City Official tells FOX 8 that Sanders was working with the City on the midnight basketball program and has been placed on immediate emergency suspension without pay.

This is the second rape reported in the area in less than a week. According to NOPD, a 20-year-old woman was raped in City Park by an unknown Hispanic man who approached her on a bicycle, then fled by bike. Police say the rape occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 8 between Esplanade and DeSaix. No suspect has been identified in this case.

NOPD reported an increase in rapes and robberies for 2014. According to police, there was a 38 percent increase in rapes reported in the city in 2014.
