NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans police arrested an Australian man Monday for allegedly burglarizing a vehicle near the French Quarter.

A witness told officers they saw 30-year-old Phillip Brett pulling on door handles of cars parked in the 300 block of North Rampart Street around 8:30 a.m.

The witness followed Brett and waited for police to arrive after he broke into a parked gold Honda Accord. Officers arrested Brett a short time later and recovered several items on the scene stolen from the Honda.

Brett was booked with simple burglary, theft and two counts of tampering.

He told police he is visiting the city for Mardi Gras from New South Wales, Australia.
