Man booked with 8th DWI after hit and run

MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) -

The Mandeville Police Department responded to the 1500 block of Madison Street on Tuesday after getting a call about a disturbance.

The victim told them that 48-year-old James Hittson, a family acquaintance, took her 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche without her permission and later returned it with extensive damage. The victim said when she confronted Hittson, he threatened her and another man at the home.

Detectives found out that Hittson had hit a 2006 Jeep in the 600 block of North Causeway before fleeing the scene without reporting the crash. Hittson was arrested and charged with DWI, hit and run, unauthorized use of a moveable, simple assault and driving under suspension.

He was taken to the St. Tammany Parish Jail.

Police say Hittson has seven prior DWIs, starting in 1984. Those arrests were in Tangipahoa, Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes.
