NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Jefferson Parish deputies exchanged gunfire with a suspect while serving a search warrant in 7th Ward.
The incident happened around 12:20 a.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of Pauger Street.
Deputies with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, along with the Gretna Major Crimes Task Force, the NOPD and a Homeland Security, were serving a narcotics search warrant at a home in the area when the incident occurred.
According to deputies, 52-year-old Steven Ellis fired at officers who breached the doorway of the home. Officers say Ellis was the subject of the search warrant.
Officers say that two Jefferson Parish deputies and a Homeland Security agent returned fire, striking Ellis in the leg.
Ellis was transported to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Once the residence was cleared, officers conducted a search warrant. Officials say they seized numerous handguns, 14.5 ounces of cocaine, 28 grams of marijuana, paraphernalia associated with the distribution of illegal narcotics and an unknown amount of cash.
Ellis faces eight counts of attempted murder, along with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Officers say Ellis has an extensive criminal history with arrests for aggravated battery, aggravated assault, domestic battery, obstruction of justice, possession of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine, multiple counts of illegal carrying of weapons, being felon in possession of a firearm, burglary, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest
