HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Higher education officials have approved the University of Southern Mississippi's purchase of a new research vessel.
The State College Board approved the project Wednesday.
USM will buy the "Point Sur" vessel from the San Jose State University Research Foundation for $1 million. Funding came in a grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
Gordon Cannon, USM's vice president for research, says in a news release that acquisition provides the school with a vessel that can be utilized by the University and other interested parties to explore the Gulf of Mexico.
The vessel will sail from its port in Monterrey, California, to Gulfport. The vessel will require about three weeks to travel from California through the Panama Canal to Mississippi.
The 135-foot Point Sur Vessel was built in 1980.
