NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - It's a case described by Slidell's Police Chief Randy Smith as sad and extremely disturbing.
Police say a one-year-old boy was forced to drink alcohol and was then beaten by his own mother and her boyfriend.
“A complaint came in that there was a group of individuals including family members and friends at somewhat of a party,” Smith said.
Police say the party took place at a home near West Hall and Mari Stella Avenue in Slidell.
“There was a one year old victim that was approached by a male subject who began to pour alcohol, a beer, down the child's throat,” Smith said.
Smith said as the biological mother's boyfriend, 24-year-old Bret Flower, poured beer into the child's mouth, the toddler began to choke.
“Witnesses to this said that the child began to regurgitate the beer after the one-year-old started chocking and the biological mother began to laugh like this was funny or an amusing trick using beer and this one year old child,” Smith said.
That's when police say, his mother, 23-year-old Krysten Verdin got mad.
“The mother went forward to the child and struck the child in a way of disciplining him for throwing up like, now I'm having to clean up this mess,” Smith said.
The incident came to the attention of law enforcement after they say a family member became disturbed and noticed signs of abuse on the child and contacted the Department of Children and Family Services.
“It's sad, but true,' Smith said. "Arrests were made for both of these individuals for cruelty on a juvenile."
Investigators say the child is safe tonight in the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services. Police want to stress, this investigation is far from over.
