NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - One man was killed and another was injured Friday in a shooting in Mid-City near the heart of the city's criminal justice complex.
The incident happened just after 2:30 p.m. at Broad and Perdido streets. It's believed that the shooter or shooters were driving a pickup truck on Broad Street when shots rang out. Witnesses told police they saw a silver, four-door Nissan Titan flee the scene. Detectives are actively looking for the vehicle.
The deceased was found lying in the middle of the Broad Street overpass. He has only been identified as a 29-year-old man.
The surviving victim, age 32, sustained a non-life-threatening graze wound to the stomach as he was walking to his car on Broad Street, according to police. Criminal District Court released a statement confirming that the surviving victim is a court employee. The statement read, in part:
Orleans Parish Sheriff's Lt. Walter Givens said he heard the shots and saw the court employee double over.
"As I was getting into my vehicle I heard several shots fired, I immediately turned around, saw a gentleman holding his side," Givens said. "I grabbed my radio and kicked in a signal known as a 108. I proceeded to go check on this individual and he stood up. At that time I was flagged down by another individual stating that there was a body on the bridge."
The shooting occurred just 300 feet from NOPD headquarters in front of Magistrate Court and a half-block from Criminal Court.
