Police: Father tosses infant in an attempt to escape police

SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - A 24-year-old man tossed his 17-month-old daughter to the ground in an attempt to flee from police in Slidell, officers say.

Lamar Causey, a 24-year-old man from Baton Rouge, allegedly threw his daughter to the ground while attempting to flee the scene of a shoplifting.

The incident happened around 3:40 p.m. Sunday at Ultra Beauty, located in the Fremaux Town Center.

Officers say they were called to the scene in an attempt to stop Causey, who was allegedly seen by an employee stealing over $1,000 worth of merchandise from Ultra Beauty.

As officers approached Causey, police say he tossed his 17-month-old to the ground without warning and fled from officers.

"I have never seen someone do that before. He literally threw his daughter down as if she was a toy doll," said Sergeant Chris Newman, a 19-year veteran of the Slidell Police Department.

The infant was transported to an area hospital to be treated for head injuries. She was treated and released to family members.

Police say Causey was quickly apprehended. Officers say he actively resisted arrest and was belligerent toward officers.

Causey allegedly threatened officers, saying he would have his "people from Baton Rouge find out who they are and to take care of them."

Slidell Police say they recovered 14 bottles of stolen perfume and cologne, which amounted to $1,187.55.

Causey was booked into the Slidell City Jail with theft of goods over $1,000, cruelty to juveniles, child desertion, resisting an officer by flight on foot, public intimidation and possession of schedule II drugs.

Causey, who is also wanted out of Baton Rouge for burglary, will be transferred to the St. Tammany Parish Jail where a bond will be set.
