NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - It's a sign that spring is in the air. Hansen's Sno-Bliz is open for the season.
Hansen's is a New Orleans tradition and is believed to be the oldest sno-ball stand in the United States.
The stand opened in 1939 and has been continuously operated by the Hansen family since the first sno-ball was served. Hansen's Sno-Bliz was first conceived during one typically hot New Orleans summer day during the Great Depression, according to Hansen's website.
Ernest Hansen saw an uncleanly sno-ball vendor and was inspired to open his own stand, with ice shaved by hand form a large block of ice. He patented a machine that would hold and shave ice cleanly and safely. His wife, Mary, created her own line of syrups and the couple began selling the sno-balls in 1939.
Hansen's Sno-Bliz was born.
Hansen's moved to the current location on Tchoupitoulas Street in 1944.
The stand is now run by Ernest and Mary's granddaughter, Ashley Hansen, who helped her grandparents run the shop since she was 12.
As the stand opens on March 3, they celebrate 76-years in business. For more information on Hansen's, visit their website at www.snobliz.com.
