Something cool happened Uptown for sno-ball lovers

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - You could call this the coolest day of the year. Hansen's Snow Bliz on Tchoupitoulas officially opened for spring and summer. The iconic snowball stand has been making treats for 76 years now. Lines formed 30 minutes before the 1 p.m. opening.

"They're the only ones that have satsuma, and they're really a tradition," one customer said, sitting in a portable chair.

When customers were asked their favorite flavors, it got interesting.

"Cardamom wedding cake," one waiting customer said. He said it's the first thing his baby had after mother's milk.

"Satsuma topped with crushed pineapple," said another woman licking her lips.

Ashley Hansen opened the doors proclaiming, "Summer is here!"

"There's no sno-ball like this," Hansen said. "My grandparents Mary and Ernest began in 1939. They started shaving the ice selling them for two cents."

Fans say the quality is more like snow than chipped ice.

Ashley says her grandmother gained a loyal following, especially among children in the neighborhood. They grew up and brought their kids.

Hansen's was name an American classic by the prestigious James Beard Foundation.
