Fire kills 63-year-old Lake Providence woman

LAKE PROVIDENCE, La. (AP) - The State Fire Marshal's office says a fire killed a 63-year-old woman and destroyed a home in Lake Providence early Friday.

Firefighters were dispatched just after 3:30 a.m. and found the single-story, wood-framed home completely engulfed by the blaze.

Investigators located the body of Carrie Bell Phoenix lying in a passageway between the home's kitchen and dining room area. The body was released to the East Carroll Parish Coroner for autopsy.

Phoenix shared the home with her 45-year-old special needs daughter, who was able to escape unharmed. The daughter told investigators her mother had remained behind in an attempt to extinguish the blaze.

Investigators determined that the fire started in a rear bedroom where they found an electric space heater and combustible items nearby.
